Getting Started

How to use the tactics training section effectively

  • Start with basic patterns in each theme
  • Practice regularly with progressive difficulty
  • Focus on accuracy before speed
  • Review your mistakes and learn from them
  • Track your progress over time

PinsBeginner

A piece is unable to move because doing so would expose a more valuable piece to capture

Absolute Pin

The pinned piece cannot legally move as it would expose the king to check

  • Pinned piece is between attacker and king
  • Moving the pinned piece would be illegal
  • Can only be broken by moving king or blocking pin

Relative Pin

The pinned piece can legally move but would expose a more valuable piece

  • Pinned piece is between attacker and valuable piece
  • Moving is legal but costly
  • Can create tactical opportunities

ForksBeginner

A piece attacks two or more enemy pieces simultaneously

Knight Fork

Using a knight to attack multiple pieces at once

  • Knight's unique movement pattern
  • Often targets king and another piece
  • Can be set up with discovered attacks

Pawn Fork

Using a pawn to attack two pieces diagonally

  • Often overlooked in calculations
  • Can force piece trades
  • Particularly strong in endgames

SkewersBeginner

Similar to a pin, but the more valuable piece is in front

Bishop Skewer

Using a bishop to force a valuable piece to move, exposing a piece behind it

  • Often targets queen and rook
  • Can be combined with other tactics
  • Particularly effective on long diagonals

Rook Skewer

Using a rook to attack pieces along a rank or file

  • Common in endgames
  • Can control entire files
  • Often leads to material gain

Discovered AttacksIntermediate

Moving one piece reveals an attack from another piece behind it

Discovered Check

Moving a piece reveals a check from another piece

  • The moving piece can create its own threat
  • Often very powerful tactically
  • Can be hard to defend against

Double Attack

The discovered attack creates two threats simultaneously

  • Both pieces are active in the attack
  • Can force material gain
  • Often decisive in games
