The earliest known reference of chess in Alabama is in the late 19th century. The Alabama Chess Association (ACA) was founded in 1980s. It is a non-profit organization that promotes chess in the state by organizing events such as tournaments, teaching programs and chess clinics. These events are aimed at promoting the game of chess to all ages and skill levels, and encouraging the growth of the chess community in Alabama. The ACA also works to promote chess in schools and youth programs, and to foster the development of young chess players in the state.
