One of the earliest known chess clubs in New Hampshire was the Manchester Chess Club, which was founded in the late 1800s. Other early chess clubs in the state included the Portsmouth Chess Club, which was founded in the early 1900s, and the Nashua Chess Club, which was founded in the mid-1900s.
In recent years, New Hampshire has produced a number of talented chess players, including the famous champion- GM Sam Shankland who represented the state in the US Championship and other major tournaments. New Hampshire has also hosted several major chess tournaments, such as the New Hampshire Open.
