Walter Shawn Browne was an American chess player who was active from the 1960s to the 2000s. He was born on March 19, 1949 in Sydney, Australia, and moved to the United States in the late 1960s. Browne was a highly successful chess player, winning six U.S. Championships and representing the United States in multiple Chess Olympiads.

Browne was known for his aggressive and tactical playing style, which made him a formidable opponent for many top players of his time. He was also a very strong blitz player, and was regarded as one of the best rapid chess players in the world.
