Turn Order and Movement

Understand how turns work and the basic movement rules

Chess is played between two players who take turns moving their pieces:

  • White always moves first
  • Players alternate turns
  • Each piece moves in a specific way
  • Only one piece can be moved per turn
  • Pieces cannot jump over other pieces (except knights)

Capturing Pieces

Learn how pieces capture and remove opponent's pieces from the board

Capturing rules in chess:

  • Pieces capture by moving to the square occupied by an opponent's piece
  • The captured piece is removed from the board
  • Captures are not mandatory
  • Pawns capture diagonally
  • Other pieces capture in the same way they move

Game End Conditions

Learn about check, checkmate, and other ways a game can end

A chess game can end in several ways:

  • Checkmate: The king is in check and cannot escape
  • Stalemate: The player to move has no legal moves and is not in check
  • Draw by agreement: Both players agree to end the game in a draw
  • Draw by repetition: The same position occurs three times
  • Draw by insufficient material: Neither player can checkmate
