Turn Order and Movement

Chess is played between two players who take turns moving their pieces:
- White always moves first
- Players alternate turns
- Each piece moves in a specific way
- Only one piece can be moved per turn
- Pieces cannot jump over other pieces (except knights)

Capturing rules in chess:
- Pieces capture by moving to the square occupied by an opponent's piece
- The captured piece is removed from the board
- Captures are not mandatory
- Pawns capture diagonally
- Other pieces capture in the same way they move

- Checkmate: The king is in check and cannot escape
- Stalemate: The player to move has no legal moves and is not in check
- Draw by agreement: Both players agree to end the game in a draw
- Draw by repetition: The same position occurs three times
- Draw by insufficient material: Neither player can checkmate
